Chennai HC Seeks TN Govt reply on not yet commencing the RTE Admission for 2025-26

The Madras High Court on Thursday (15.5.2025) sought response from the Tamil Nadu Government regarding the delay in initiating the RTE admissions for the academic year 2025-26.

Chennai HC Seeks TN Govt reply on not yet commencing the RTE Admission for 2025-26: The admission process for entry-level classes (LKG or Class-1) for children from disadvantaged groups, as stipulated by the Right to Education Act, in private schools in Tamil Nadu has not yet commenced for the academic year 2025-26.

At least 25% of the available seats in entry-level classes must be reserved for eligible children under the Right to Education Act of 2009 in all unaided private schools in Tamil Nadu, pending any official announcement.

The admission process under the Right to Education (RTE) Act for the academic year 2025-26 has been completed in the states of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Delhi, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand, Odisha, and Uttar Pradesh.

Parents in Tamil Nadu seeking free admission for their children in nearby private schools for LKG or Class 1 are feeling disheartened and are urging the Tamil Nadu Government to promptly issue a notification regarding RTE Admission for the 2025-26 academic year.

Typically, the education department of Tamil Nadu issues the official notification in April, with the online admission process commencing in mid-April and lasting for 30 days until May. Subsequently, individual schools will proceed with the next stages of admission, which involve selecting students through a lottery system. However, there has been no announcement for this academic year as of yet.
