A network of engineering and technology schools in India is known as the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT). Founded in 1950, they are administered by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 and fall under the jurisdiction of the Indian Government’s Ministry of Education. As the nation’s leading technological institutions, the Act designates them as Institutes of National Importance and establishes their responsibilities, authority, and governance structure.
Currently, 23 IITs are covered by this act. While each IIT functions independently, they are connected by a common body known as the IIT body, which is in charge of managing them. The IIT Council is ex officio chaired by the Indian Minister of Education. About 38% of the 2024 class of Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) graduates have not found employment, according to data gathered through Right to Information (RTI) applications.
