Is the distance from home to school a requirement for admission into KVS?

The Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act (RTE) establishes an exceptional provision mandating that all children be enrolled in a local school, ensuring that 25% of the available seats in entry-level classes are offered with no tuition fees. The term “neighbourhood” is defined for Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVS) as follows:

  • For major cities and urban areas (including all district headquarters and metropolitan regions), a radius of 5 kilometers applies.
  • For all other locations not included in the first category, a radius of 8 kilometers is applicable.

All applicants must provide proof of residence. Additionally, a written self-declaration from the parent regarding the distance may be accepted, pending verification.
