JNV Selection Test 2026-27 for Class-6
In line with the National Policy of Education (1986), the Government of India established Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya (JNVs). These institutions are co-educational residential schools that are entirely funded and managed by the Government of India through an autonomous body known as the Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti. Admissions to JNVs are conducted via the Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test (JNVST) for Class VI. Everything You Need to Know About Navodaya Admission 2026
While education in schools is provided at no cost, which includes board and lodging, uniforms, and textbooks, a fee of Rs. 600 per month is charged solely to students in Classes IX to XII for the Vidyalaya Vikas Nidhi (VVN). Nevertheless, students from SC/ST categories, Divyang students, all female students, and those whose family income falls below the poverty line (BPL) are exempt from this fee.
For the children of Government employees who do not fall into the exempted categories (which include students from Classes VI to VIII, all SC/ST and female students, as well as wards of BPL families), the Vikas Nidhi fee will be set at Rs. 1500 per month or the actual Children Education Allowance received by the parent per month, whichever amount is lower.
However, the VVN fee shall not be less than Rs. 600 per student per month. The aim is to provide high-quality modern education that incorporates a strong cultural component, instills values, raises environmental awareness, and includes adventure activities and physical education for talented children, primarily from rural backgrounds. Additionally, the initiative seeks to foster national integration by facilitating the migration of students between Hindi and Non-Hindi speaking states.

Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Selection Test – 2026
The JNV Selection Test for admission to Class VI in JNVs for the academic year 2026-27 is scheduled to take place in two phases. The first phase will occur on Saturday, December 13, 2025, at 11:30 A.M. for a specific list of JNV schools, while the second phase will be held on Saturday, April 11, 2026, at 11:30 A.M. for the remaining JNVs.

JNV Admit Card and Selection Test Result 2026-27
The admit cards will be issued based on the date set by NVS in due course, which will be displayed on the application portal. Candidates and their parents will have the opportunity to download the admit cards free of charge before the JNVST 2026 examination. The results of the written examination will be announced for Summer-bound JNVs by March 2026 and for Winter-bound JNVs by May 2026. Results can be checked on the official NVS website at www.navodaya.gov.in
The Principal of the respective Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya will also inform the provisionally selected candidates via telephone on their registered mobile numbers, followed by a notification sent through speed post. NVS will provide only two wait lists to accommodate any vacancies that may arise due to candidates’ refusal or failure to submit the necessary essential certificates. Admission Deadline: All admissions must be finalized by December 31, 2026.
Step-by-Step Admission Process for Parents and Students in NVS 2026
- Admission to Class VI in JNVs is district-specific. A student must be studying in Class V during the academic session 2025–26 in a government, government-aided, or recognized school located in the same district where the JNV is situated. Admission is allowed only for that particular district’s JNV.
- The candidate must be a bonafide resident of the district. A valid residential certificate of the parent, issued by a competent government authority, must be submitted at the time of admission. If the district was bifurcated after the JNV was established and no new JNV exists in the new district, the old district boundaries will apply for admission eligibility.
- The age of the candidate should be between 01 May 2014 and 31 July 2016 (both dates inclusive). This applies to all categories including SC, ST, OBC, Divyang, and General. A government-issued birth certificate is mandatory. If there are doubts about the candidate’s age, a medical board will be consulted, and its decision will be final.
- The student must be enrolled in Class V for the full academic year 2025–26 in a valid school within the same district. Candidates who were not promoted to Class V before 31 July 2025 or those who have completed Class V in previous sessions are not eligible.
- The student should have completed Classes III, IV, and V in one full academic session each from government, aided, or recognized schools. Continuity of study is important for eligibility.
- Students from the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS) are eligible if they hold a valid ‘B’ certificate issued on or before 15 September 2025 and meet the required age limits. Their rural or urban status will be determined by their place of residence, not by the NIOS center. NIOS study centers must be accredited.
- Repeater candidates are not allowed. A student can appear for the JNV Selection Test only once. NVS will check data from previous years to detect repeaters, and such applications will be cancelled at any stage, including after provisional selection.
- Aadhaar number is mandatory for application and admission. If the child is not yet enrolled for Aadhaar, they must apply with parental consent before registration. Until Aadhaar is received, candidates can register provisionally by submitting a residence certificate. Aadhaar must be presented at the time of selection test and final admission. JNVs also offer Aadhaar enrollment facilities for students.
- For rural quota eligibility, the student must have studied Classes III, IV, and V in full academic sessions at schools located in rural areas of the same district. At least 75% of the total seats are reserved for rural candidates.
- Students who studied even a single day in an urban school in Classes III to V will be considered urban candidates. Urban or rural classification is based on the location of the school as notified by the government.
- Transgender candidates are included under the boys’ category for reservation and merit-based selection in various categories like SC, ST, OBC, Divyang, rural, and urban.
Reservation in NVS Admission 2026-27
At least 75% of the seats in each district are reserved for candidates from rural areas, while the remaining seats are filled based on district-wide merit from both urban and rural applicants. SC and ST reservations are provided in proportion to their district population, with a minimum of 15% for SC and 7.5% for ST, and a combined maximum of 50%. These reservations are interchangeable if qualified candidates in one category are unavailable.
Additionally, 27% of seats are reserved for OBC candidates as per the Central OBC list, and those not on the list will be treated as General category. A minimum of one-third of the total seats are reserved for girls, and preference is given to them to meet this quota if necessary. Rural-open seats are allocated block-wise based on rural population data. There is also a reservation for Divyang (children with disabilities), including those with blindness, hearing impairment, locomotor disabilities, cerebral palsy, dwarfism, and acid attack victims, provided they have at least 40% certified disability as per Government of India norms.
